Storm damage repair is like conducting triage in an emergency room. Storm damage repair can be done to windows, porches, and even the roof of the home. Storm damage repair on a roof is a project that needs to be done quickly before the rest of the roof becomes weak. You also don’t want water and debris to enter your home, causing much more damage. Conducting storm damage repair on the roof isn’t meant to be a complete fix, but its meant to patch the roof until a professional can properly repair it. Many of the materials you may have on hand already, while others are easily purchased from a hardware store. Its a good idea to have these items available just in case you need to conduct repairs on your roof.
Locate and Prepare the Hole
In order to conduct storm damage repair, you must wait for the storm to slow down or subside, and you need to locate the problem areas. Place a ladder on the side of your home and climb it. Get your footing and look around for obvious damage. Remove any debris that is still around the area. Once the site is cleared, you can then use the tape measure to measure the size of the area to be repaired. In order to properly accomplish storm damage repair on the roof, measure the site as though it were a square or rectangle.
Trim the Materials
Once you have the measurements recorded, you can begin to trim and cut the materials necessary to do your storm damage repair work. Use the measurements and transfer them to your sheet metal, plywood, and plastic. When transferring the measurements, you should add an extra six inches around the perimeter. This will give you a large enough area to patch the damage. Cut the plywood using the jigsaw and use the tin snips to cut the sheet metal. The plastic sheeting can using a pair of ordinary scissors.
Storm Damage Repair
The hole in the roof needs to be patched so that it will be protected from the elements until a professional can do it properly. This is done in several layers as you also want to make sure that it is insulated so you don’t lose too much energy. Begin with the piece of sheet metal by placing it over the hole and making sure its centered. Affix it to the roof using the tacks. Place the plastic sheet over the steel followed by the plywood. Use the nail gun or hammer to affix it to the roof. Apply silicone caulk around the plywood.
