7 Reasons You Shouldn’t Ignore Water Damage

August 4, 2022 | Water Damage

A number of different issues can cause water damage in the home. Perhaps it is a plumbing problem you didn’t know you had or a flood that happened during bad weather.

No matter the cause of the water damage, you need to be aware of the signs and make sure you take the steps to fix the problem immediately rather than ignore it.

Here are 7 reasons you should never ignore water damage.

1. Can Cause Structural Damage

No matter how little, water damage can ultimately cause structural damage to your home if left untreated. If you fail to repair and remedy the water damage, the problem can worsen and cause extensive damage. This is especially dangerous for a home that had already previously faced structural issues. Cracks in your foundation or on your walls are a sign there is a structural issue, and water damage can exacerbate these issues.

2. The Growth of Mold and Mildew

When water damage is ignored, you are letting the damp and excess moisture in the home build up, which can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Not only can this affect the home’s integrity, but it can also cause health complications.

3. Causes Bad Odors

Water damage in the home can also lead to musty odors. These unpleasant odors are often caused by mold growth and mildew following the water damage. To eliminate the smell completely, you need to address the water damage and make the necessary repairs.

4. Causes Staining

Visual signs are often the first red flag of water damage in the home. If you notice staining or dampness on the walls and they are a darker color than usual, it is a sign of water damage. When ignored, the stains can become permanent and will cause more work for you in the future when you finally decide to make the repairs.

5. Increases Repair Costs

Ignoring water damage instead of remedying the situation immediately also leads to more extensive and expensive repairs in the future. The longer you leave the water damage, the more it will cost. Fixing the damage right away is usually quick and much more affordable.

6. Causes Electrical Problems

Not only can ignoring water damage lead to extensive repairs and other damage in the home, but it can also be dangerous. Depending on where the water damage is located, it can cause problems for the electrical wiring. To remedy this, deal with any flood or water cleanup you have right away to avoid problems down the road.

7. May Indicate a Larger Problem

Another reason not to ignore water damage is that it can be an indication of a bigger problem you have. There may be an underlying issue you aren’t aware of, like a hole in the roof or another issue that needs to be repaired.

In addition to all the reasons we have listed for not ignoring water damage, you also need to keep in mind that there may be damage happening that is not visible to the eye. So, the problems may be worse than you initially thought.
